Porcelain Veneers

A common dental restoration that is used at Karen Frazer Rea, DDS is that of porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin restorations made of porcelain that are bonded over the top of a tooth after a thin layer of enamel has been removed from the natural tooth. They are used in a variety of situations. Veneers can correct fractures in teeth, change the size of a tooth, lengthen teeth, change the color of a tooth, or close in spaces between teeth.

Veneers are extremely versatile, and are created at a state-of-the-art laboratory in order to perfectly match the restoration with the natural teeth. The whole goal of cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneer placement is to ensure that it looks natural, giving it the appearance that the patient was born with teeth this beautiful. This requires Dr. Frazer to work hard to make sure the new veneers matches the existing teeth so that it doesn't stand out as a man-made restoration. To do this, Dr. Frazer will take a photograph of the patient's teeth alongside shade guides to give the laboratory a good idea of what the patient's existing teeth look like in order to match the coloring of the veneer as close as possible. When completing smile makeovers and covering a majority of the teeth with porcelain veneers, patients will have a say in how they want their new smile to look.

While veneers are strong, they can still break and fracture like natural teeth. Acidic foods and drinks should be avoided, as they are not kind to the porcelain or the bonding materials that hold the veneers in place. Biting into hard or firm objects is also not recommended to maintain the veneers and keep them in place. Dr. Frazer will discuss with patients the benefits of porcelain veneers and how to keep them looking great for years to come!
